Beware Ice Dams

The snow is melting here in Buffalo and Tonawanda. Every homeowner should be aware of ice dams and the water damage that they can cause to your home. An ice dam occurs when snow on your roof melts and drips down to the gutter and then freezes again or becomes trapped by ice. The ice can buildup forming an ice dam. If your roof isn’t properly sealed, the water will start to get under your shingles and cause water damage. This is what will cause spots on your drywall ceiling or water leaks. If you can safely knock icicles off your gutter, it’ll bring weight off of your gutters and can help with the water buildup. One key way to prevent ice dams before they occur, is to keep your attic cool in the winter time. This will prevent the snow from melting and then refreezing again.
